Former Botafogo striker Tássio Maia dos Santos, 41, died on Wednesday after a wall collapsed in the Santa Teresa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro during a severe windstorm. The incident occurred on Rua Doutor Júlio Otoni and claimed two lives; while some reports describe the second victim as a friend of the athlete, other coverage identifies him as Vandré Cordeiro.
Tássio played for Botafogo in 2015 and had an extensive career spanning numerous clubs, including Red Bull Bragantino, Figueirense, and CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria. After retiring in 2019, he became a partner in Mansão Alvite, an event space located on the street where the collapse occurred. Botafogo and Resende Futebol Clube both issued statements expressing grief over his passing.
The tragedy took place amid wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h that caused widespread disruption across Rio de Janeiro and its metropolitan area. The storm led to city-wide power outages, the temporary suspension of train and metro services, and the closure of Santos Dumont airport, with several flights diverted from Galeão airport. Additionally, the Defesa Civil is searching for a fisherman who went missing in Angra dos Reis during the weather event.
