Former Italian MP Alessandro Di Battista Hospitalized in Cuba Following Medical Emergency

Alessandro Di Battista, a former member of the Five Star Movement (M5S), has been hospitalized in Cuba after suffering a medical emergency. Di Battista was initially admitted to a hospital in Santa Clara on Friday evening after experiencing a severe headache and loss of consciousness. He was subsequently transferred by ambulance to the Hermanos Ameijeiras hospital in Havana, which is described as one of the most equipped facilities on the island. Upon arrival in Havana, he was reported to be lucid and able to answer questions from medical staff, though he underwent a CT scan with contrast to further evaluate his condition.

Di Battista was in Cuba to produce a series of reports titled 'La polvere del mondo' for Il Fatto Quotidiano and TvLoft. The Italian government is monitoring the situation closely. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani is in contact with the embassy and the family of the former parliamentarian to provide assistance. While the Italian government has made a medical aircraft available for his repatriation, officials stated that the transfer will only occur if doctors determine that his clinical condition allows for safe transport.

Reports on the severity of his condition vary. A center-right source describes his state as critical and mentions reports of a stroke, while a center source focuses on his lucidity upon arrival at the Havana hospital. The M5S party issued a statement expressing great apprehension and support for his family. Di Battista's wife, Sahra Lahouasnia, has traveled from Rome to Havana to be with him.
