French Firefighters Plan Nationwide Protest Over Resource Shortages

French firefighting unions have announced a nationwide protest for September 29 following a failed meeting with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Union representatives expressed disappointment and frustration after the meeting, with spokesperson Xavier Boy and UNSA-Sapeurs-pompiers president David Saquet describing the minister's responses as political blah blah. The unions are demanding a modernized civil security framework, increased funding for health and safety, and the recruitment of professional firefighters. Minister Nuñez stated that a bill to improve civil security will be presented to the unions on September 8. He noted that resources would evolve in the next budget but did not commit to a specific increase. Additionally, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has commissioned seven parliamentarians to submit policy proposals for improving firefighting by September 21.

The dispute comes amid a summer of unprecedented heat and megafires fueled by climate change. Currently, nearly 80 percent of France's firefighters are volunteers, while professionals make up less than 20 percent and are primarily based in urban areas. Union representatives argue that personnel and equipment were insufficient during recent major wildfires, such as the one near Bordeaux.
