Germany Responds to Islamist Attack on Berlin Pride Parade

An Islamist attacker killed one person and injured dozens during a Christopher Street Day (CSD) event in Berlin. The perpetrator, identified as 21 year old Abdul Ballout, rammed a vehicle into the crowd and allegedly attacked others with a machete before being shot dead by police in a garden allotment. Security authorities were reportedly monitoring Ballout via a hidden camera at the time of the attack. In the aftermath, a survey by Civey found that 38 percent of Germans reported a decrease in their sense of security, while 51 percent of respondents disagreed that Germany is a stable and secure country.

In response to the violence, Hamburg prepared for its own Pride parade with an expected attendance of 250,000 people. Police in Hamburg announced they would deploy double the number of officers used last year to protect the event. While center left sources highlight the support of SPD and Green party leaders for the parade, other perspectives criticize the government response.
