Recent flash floods in Nepal, caused by a glacier collapse near the border with China, have sent torrents of water down the Bhote Koshi River and resulted in a mounting death toll. This event follows another disaster in the Himalayas within a month, contributing to fears among scientists, climbers, and trekkers that snow and ice losses are accelerating. IPCC reports and other studies have documented the retreat of glaciers in the warming region, where meltwater accumulates in glacial lakes held back by unstable boulder dams. These lakes can burst suddenly, sending debris and water down valleys. Experts suggest that continuous monitoring and cross border information sharing are essential because Himalayan hazards do not respect political boundaries.
