A massive piece of a glacier collapsed in the Himalayas, triggering a flood that has killed hundreds of people and left over one thousand missing. The event occurred on the border between Nepal and Tibet, where the Bhotekoshi river turned into a destructive flow of meltwater, mud, and rocks. Experts from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development reported that water levels rose by as much as nine meters within half an hour. The surge primarily originated from the Lhende Khola, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi that had previously flooded fourteen months ago.

Satellite imagery from Planet Labs shows that a section of a nameless glacier near Mount Langtang Lirung broke off at an altitude of 5,200 meters. According to Walter Immerzeel, a professor of mountain hydrology at Utrecht University, the broken piece was approximately one kilometer wide, 1.5 kilometers long, and an estimated 200 meters thick. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a seismic shock with a magnitude of 5.2 during the event. Scientists suggest the most likely cause was the impact of the falling ice creating a massive mudflow, though they also considered the possibility of a natural dam bursting.

Experts indicate that climate change increased the risk of this disaster. United Nations data from 2023 shows that Nepal's glaciers lost nearly a third of their total ice volume in just over thirty years, with some retreating by more than ten meters per year over the last decade. The instability of hanging glaciers on steep slopes makes these regions particularly prone to such avalanches.
