The World Meteorological Organization reports that El Niño is intensifying and is expected to become a strong episode between August and October 2026. This phenomenon involves an abnormal rise in sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which alters global atmospheric behavior and precipitation patterns. UN Secretary General António Guterres warned that the phenomenon is exacerbating a planet already suffering from heat domes and forest fires, attributing the crisis to the use of fossil fuels. They point to the risk of thermal expansion in power lines, which can cause wires to sag and potentially lead to short circuits if vegetation is not properly maintained. This vulnerability was illustrated by a blackout in parts of the Balkans involving Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia, which was triggered by inadequate vegetation management under power lines.
