Five firefighters have died since last week as Greek crews battle a series of wildfires, including a blaze northwest of Athens that has burned for four days. The death toll rose after two pilots, one from Greece and one from Denmark, died in a midair collision on Sunday while fighting a fire in the Psatha area. The helicopters were leased from Australia's McDermott Aviation. Following the crash, the fire department grounded all helicopters of that model in the area pending an investigation.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and other officials attributed the difficulty of the operations to extreme weather conditions, specifically strong and erratic winds reaching 100kph. In addition to the fire near Athens, blazes have affected Crete, the Peloponnese, and the Gulf of Corinth. A wildfire near Porto Germeno is expected to be classified as a megafire, with estimates suggesting it affected more than 10,000 hectares.
Authorities have made several arrests related to the fires. A 44 year old man was arrested on suspicion of deliberately starting a fire on the island of Cephalonia, and two electricity company employees were arrested in connection to a fire near Porto Germeno that was apparently caused by a power cable spark.
