Hamas stated on Saturday, August 8, that it remains ready to move forward with the peace plan for the Gaza Strip supported by the United States. The group called for increased pressure on Israel to accept the agreement. According to reports, the plan recently announced by President Donald Trump involves a second stage that links the disarmament of Hamas to a progressive withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Palestinian territory.
A Hamas official told the Agence France-Presse that the group and other factions confirmed their readiness to proceed provided that Israel agrees and begins implementing the accord. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently campaigning for re-election in October and facing strong opposition to the deal, expressed his refusal of the plan on Wednesday. While Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative of the peace council, assured Netanyahu that Israel would only withdraw after the complete disarmament of Hamas, the prime minister remains opposed.
Israeli military operations in Gaza have reportedly decreased in intensity recently, though they continue. On Saturday, the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis reported three people wounded by Israeli fire. Since the October 2025 ceasefire, the Hamas run health ministry reports that 1,257 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, a figure considered reliable by the United Nations. The Israeli army reported five soldiers and one civilian contractor killed during the same period.
