Hawaii Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency on Friday as Tropical Storm Lala gathers strength and approaches the Big Island. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts the storm could reach hurricane strength by Saturday. If the storm makes landfall, it would mark the first time the Big Island has been hit by a hurricane since 1871.
A hurricane warning is currently in effect for Hawaii County, while a tropical storm warning covers Maui, Molokai, and Kahoolawe. The NHC reports that Lala was located approximately 275 miles east southeast of South Point on Friday afternoon, with maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour. Meteorologists warn that the storm could bring between 8 and 25 inches of rain, leading to life threatening flooding, mudslides, and dangerous surf conditions.
Governor Green described the storm as enormous and urged residents in fragile housing to seek shelter with friends or family. He cited the 1992 Category 4 Hurricane Iniki as a warning, noting that the storm caused 6 deaths and 3 billion dollars in damage. Authorities also expressed concern regarding wildfires, recalling the 2023 Lahaina fires which were fueled by winds from a distant hurricane. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi urged residents on Oahu to complete their preparations before weather conditions deteriorate.
