Heavy Monsoon Rains Trigger Fatalities and Widespread Flooding Across India and Pakistan

Severe monsoon rainfall has caused multiple deaths and widespread infrastructure disruption across India and Pakistan. In Gujarat, four people died, including three farm laborers killed by electrocution in Navsari and an 11 year old girl swept away in a canal in Anand. Over 16,500 people were evacuated in Gujarat, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for five districts. In Kerala, at least three people were killed by landslides, including a woman in Idukki whose home was flattened. Heavy rains in Kerala have blocked major roads, including the Kochi to Dhanushkodi National Highway, and forced the opening of several dam shutters. In Pakistan, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported 45 deaths in Punjab, while the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) noted significant rises in the Tarbela and Mangla dam levels. Urban flooding risks persist across various cities in Punjab and Sindh, Pakistan.

Regional disruptions continue as authorities implement safety measures. In Andhra Pradesh, the Godavari and Sabari rivers have caused the submergence of 189 villages, with 32 islands in the Konaseema district cut off from the mainland. In Karnataka, school holidays were declared in parts of the Kodagu district due to safety concerns. Meanwhile, Mumbai remains under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall, having already surpassed its July monthly average rainfall quota by 66 percent. Rescue operations are ongoing in several regions, with the NDRF and Army deployed in India to assist affected populations.
