Heavy Rains and Floods Cause Widespread Casualties and Displacement Across India

Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and casualties across multiple Indian states, with the combined death toll in Kerala and Assam exceeding 100. In Assam, the death toll rose to 87, with the Sivasagar district identified as the worst hit. Official reports indicate that over 1.28 lakh people across seven districts in Assam remain affected, with 380 villages and over 14,000 hectares of crop area inundated. In Kerala, the death toll reached 15 on Monday, with severe waterlogging and landslips reported in high range areas. Chief Minister VD Satheesan stated that while the situation is under control, floodwaters in Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts have not receded as expected.

In the Ernakulam district of Kerala, 110 people remained in relief camps as of Monday. Authorities issued alerts for residents near the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers due to water levels remaining above warning marks. The Malankara dam reached its red alert mark of 41.30 metres, prompting the discharge of excess water. Additionally, the Ernakulam District Collector declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Tuesday, August 4, due to the rainfall.

Other regions also reported significant impacts. In Jammu and Kashmir, a 52 year old woman died in the Kupwara district after a cloudburst triggered flash floods. The Srinagar Jammu National Highway was closed due to the weather. Meanwhile, Telangana experienced heavy overnight rain between August 3 and August 4. Kamareddy district recorded the highest rainfall at 182.8 mm, while Hyderabad's Saroornagar recorded 113 mm. The downpour in Hyderabad led to widespread waterlogging and power outages in several areas.
