Historic Droughts Lower European River Levels and Disrupt Trade

Record low water levels in major European rivers, including the Rhine and the Danube, are severely disrupting trade routes and revealing historical artifacts. In Germany, the Rhine has reached its lowest recorded level at the Kaub bottleneck, hindering the transport of raw materials such as coal, crude oil, and grains. Because a single inland ship can carry as much as 150 trucks, rail and road networks are unable to compensate for the lost capacity. This has forced some chemical and steel plants to reduce production and may contribute to rising inflation. Beyond Germany, the Danube has seen record retreats, while Poland has restricted industrial water use and the United Kingdom has declared an official drought in London. The receding waters have also exposed archaeological finds, including a Nazi ship in Serbia, a Second World War bomb in Hungary, and 17th century garden marks. The center left source frames the crisis as a result of rapid climate change and outdated infrastructure. In contrast, the center right source frames the situation as a failure of government policy, arguing that decades of neglecting waterway deepening in favor of rail investment have left the economy vulnerable.
