IAEA Chief Supports Potential Trump and Kim Summit

Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has expressed support for a potential meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. In an interview with The Washington Post, Grossi stated that it is very important for the leaders to meet and argued that Kim's reputation as an autocrat and human rights abuser should not prevent diplomatic engagement. Grossi compared the situation to Trump's efforts to broker an agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noting that shaking hands is the purpose of diplomacy to facilitate cordial conversations and achieve results.

Reports from The Wall Street Journal indicate that Trump may be seeking a meeting during his next trip to Asia, possibly during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. This would follow three in-person meetings held during Trump's first term in Singapore, Hanoi, and Panmunjom.

Reactions to the potential summit remain mixed. Some observers hope the meeting could reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula and restart stalled peace efforts. Others express concern that such a meeting could legitimize Kim as a world leader while the objective of North Korean denuclearization remains unfulfilled.
