India Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Historic Rendition of Vande Mataram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led India's 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort on August 15, 2026. In a historic first for the occasion, the national song 'Vande Mataram' was rendered at the Red Fort complex, marking 150 years of the song's legacy. The rendition followed the passage of the Vande Mataram Bill, which granted the national song the same legal protection as the national anthem. This framework focuses on manufacturing excellence, farming and food processing, tech innovation, Gati Shakti connectivity, defense self-reliance, green and blue economies, and global soft power. Specifically, the Prime Minister urged a strategic push for soft power through yoga, Ayurveda, films, VFX, gaming, and tourism. He also announced a major semiconductor program to increase self-reliance, noting that three plants are already operational and more are expected within seven to eight years.

Security for the event was extensive, with over 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed across Delhi and 1,000 CCTV cameras equipped with AI-based analytics monitoring the Red Fort area. On the eve of the celebrations, President Droupadi Murmu approved 78 gallantry awards, including 13 posthumous medals. Internationally, Singapore's President Tharman Shanmugaratnam sent congratulations to President Murmu, highlighting the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
