India Observes National Handloom Day with Government Promotion and Cultural Showcases

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a social media campaign for National Handloom Day on August 7, urging citizens to share videos of their favorite handloom products and use the hashtag #NationalHandloomDay. In an Instagram reel, the Prime Minister referenced the 1905 start of the Swadeshi movement and encouraged the use of GRWM style content to promote handloom diversity. He stated that supporting weavers helps build an Atmanirbhar Bharat and ensures the economic prosperity of poor families. While some reports focused on the Prime Minister's call for national support, a center right outlet highlighted a critical reaction from Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke, who called the Prime Minister a prime influencer and used the occasion to request that the leader address youth issues in his Independence Day speech.

Concurrent with the official campaign, various exhibitions and cultural reports highlighted the diversity of Indian weaving. At Pragati Maidan, the Ministry of Textiles organized the Know Your Weaves exhibition, where artisans from Kutch, Banaras, and Bhagalpur showcased their work. One featured artisan, Mitali Baruah from Guwahati, demonstrated the use of a traditional portable loin loom used in Assam's hill and tribal regions. Separately, reports detailed the Ringa weaving tradition of the Bonda tribe in Odisha's Malkangiri district. The Ringa is a striped wraparound skirt woven primarily for personal and community identity rather than commerce, often created by women in a matriarchal society between their farming and household duties.
