India's National Hockey Team Jersey Change to Saffron Sparks Controversy

Hockey India has changed the primary color of the national hockey team's jersey from traditional blue to saffron ahead of the World Cups in Belgium and the Netherlands. The decision has triggered widespread criticism from former players, fans, and political figures. Hockey India stated that the new kit is inspired by the rising sun and the national flag, symbolizing courage, sacrifice, and victory. The federation also cited technical reasons for the change, noting that blue jerseys often blend with the standard blue synthetic pitches used in international matches, which impairs visibility for players.

Former captain Viren Rasquinha described the move as embarrassing, arguing that the identity of the Indian team has always been blue. Former Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik also condemned the decision, alleging it was made under pressure from the BJP government in Odisha. Patnaik compared the significance of the blue jersey to Argentina's iconic stripes and characterized the change as an attempt to erase a priceless sporting legacy.

The framing of this event varies by political lean. Outlets with a center-right lean focus on the broader national political conflict, highlighting accusations from Opposition leaders that the move is part of an ideological effort by the BJP and RSS to saffronise public institutions. Outlets with a left lean emphasize the clash between sporting legacy and the technical justifications provided by the federation. Opposition leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Tariq Anwar have characterized the change as an attempt to impose a particular ideology on national symbols. Congress MP Amar Singh suggested that if such changes continue, military uniforms could be next. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Kirti Azad stated that while sporting success depends on performance rather than color, the move away from India's traditional blue identity is questionable.
