Iran Faces Economic Pressure Amid Escalating Tensions with United States

Iran is facing significant economic pressure following the imposition of severe sanctions by the administration of Donald Trump. While some leading figures within the Iranian regime have warned of a potential collapse due to hyperinflation and a heavy dependence on China, the regime has publicly maintained a composed demeanor. In response to the economic warfare, Iran has explored several strategic options to exert counter pressure on the global market.

Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and former head of the Revolutionary Guard, has threatened to halt all oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz and other parts of the Persian Gulf if the economic war continues. This threat follows a period of conflict that has already seen Iranian attacks and threats against maritime transport, which have significantly disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Houthi allies of Tehran have restricted shipping in the Red Sea, causing some Chinese shipping companies to divert their routes to avoid the Bab el Mandeb strait.

Beyond maritime disruptions, Iran has targeted U.S. bases and energy infrastructure in Jordan and Gulf states. There are further concerns regarding potential attacks on power plants and desalination plants in the region, as well as cyberattacks. The United Kingdom recently reported that hackers linked to Iran paralyzed a small power plant. The situation is framed differently depending on the political perspective. A center left perspective emphasizes the internal fragility of the Iranian regime and its struggle with economic crisis. Conversely, a center right perspective focuses on the strategic military and economic threats Iran poses to global energy security and regional stability.
