Iranian President Describes Communication With Supreme Leader as Very Difficult

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated in an interview with state television on Wednesday that interaction with the country's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is currently very difficult. Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the role of supreme leader after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an attack launched by the US and Israel. Mojtaba Khamenei has not made any public appearances since taking power. One source reports that he was wounded in the attack that killed his father and has only communicated with the public through written messages.

Despite the difficulty in communication, Pezeshkian defended the leader by stating that their meetings have been productive and characterized by kindness and reasonable logic. He attributed negative descriptions of the leader to malicious individuals. Other reports indicate tension between the two leaders, citing a letter in which Mojtaba Khamenei allegedly warned Pezeshkian that he would accept the president's resignation if it were resubmitted.

Speculation regarding the leader's condition has grown because he did not attend his father's funeral ceremonies. There are reports that the Iranian regime is avoiding releasing audio of the supreme leader due to fears that acoustic signatures or other audio imprints could reveal his location and condition. Meanwhile, regional sources suggest that a draft agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is awaiting approval from Mojtaba Khamenei.

In other diplomatic developments, Pezeshkian spoke with Hamas political bureau head Khalil al-Hayya, stating that Tehran supports any decisions made by Palestinian leaders in negotiations with Israel. While the US claims to be negotiating with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Iran denies speaking with the US and says it is nearing an agreement with Oman.
