Ireland Joins Other EU Nations in Returning Asylum Seekers to Italy

Ireland has announced its intention to return asylum seekers to Italy, citing the principle that the first European Union country of entry is responsible for processing asylum applications. Ireland is the seventh state to adopt this policy, following Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands. A spokesperson for the Irish Ministry of Justice and Migration stated that the country continues to process transfers under the Dublin III Regulation and the new Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (AMMR), the latter of which became operational on June 12, 2026, for new applicants. The AMMR aims to simplify criteria and reduce the time required to determine the competent member state.

Legal expert Daniele Gallo notes that Italy's attempts to implement a moratorium on transfers for those arriving before June 12 are not compliant with European law.
