Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon killed at least 11 people on Saturday, marking the deadliest incident since a US sponsored framework agreement was reached in June. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health and state media, seven people, including three children and two women, were killed when a home in the village of Ansar was struck. An additional four people were killed and 17 others were wounded in a separate strike in the town of Deir Zahrani. Other reports indicated strikes targeting the Ali al Taher ridge, a strategic area where the Israeli military claims Hezbollah maintains underground facilities.
The Israeli military stated that the raids targeted Hezbollah infrastructure in the Nabatieh and Ansar areas. These strikes were described as retaliation for an attack by Hezbollah against Israeli soldiers on the Ali al Taher ridge, which Israel says is within a security zone where its troops are operating. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam rejected this account, stating that the victims in Ansar were not military targets and calling the escalation extremely dangerous.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attacks as violations of the framework agreement and international law. He suggested the strikes sent a clear message regarding the ongoing negotiation process, with an eighth round of US sponsored talks scheduled for early next month in Rome. Hezbollah vowed an appropriate response and urged the Lebanese government to abandon direct negotiations, which the group described as humiliating.
The current hostilities follow a broader conflict that began in March when Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel. Lebanese authorities report that over 4,300 people have died since that escalation began. While violence decreased following a June memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran and a subsequent framework deal between Israel and Lebanon, tensions remain high over the disarmament of Hezbollah and the presence of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
