The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that it has opened a criminal investigation into the death of Hind Rajab, a five year old Palestinian girl killed in January 2024. The investigation follows a review of findings and alleged failures in the coordination of a Palestine Red Crescent ambulance. The military admitted that its troops fired on the car carrying Rajab and her family, as well as the ambulance sent to rescue them, after previously denying that soldiers were present in the area. Rajab and six family members were killed in the vehicle, and two paramedics were killed when their ambulance came under fire. The incident gained international attention due to audio recordings of Rajab making a desperate, hours long plea for help to the Red Crescent.

In addition to the Rajab case, the Israeli military announced a criminal probe into the March 2025 killing of 15 Palestinian medics and humanitarian personnel. However, the military stated it would not launch criminal investigations into other high profile incidents, including the killing of seven World Central Kitchen employees and four Doctors Without Borders staff. In the case of World Central Kitchen, the military described the event as an operational failure, stating that commanders had mistaken individuals in the vehicles for Hamas operatives.

The announcement has been met with skepticism by the family of Hind Rajab. Her grandmother told AFP that the family does not trust the Israeli justice system and views the probe as an attempt by the military to justify the killing to the world. The Israeli foreign ministry countered this by stating that the opening of the investigation demonstrates that Israel is a law abiding democracy.
