Israeli Political Landscape Shifts as October 27 Election Approaches

Israel is preparing for elections on October 27 amid a political environment shaped by the aftermath of the October 7 attacks. While many established political figures remain at the top of their party lists, a new party called People of Israel (POI) has launched to challenge the existing leadership. Founded by former IDF brigadier general Ofer Winter, the POI party includes survivors of October 7, bereaved relatives, and civil society leaders. Winter has explicitly framed the lack of political experience among his candidates as an asset, arguing that the experience of veteran leaders led to the failures of October 7.

A center right perspective suggests that the anticipated political clean sweep following the October 7 failures has not occurred because these familiar faces remain in power. Meanwhile, a left leaning perspective emphasizes the uncertainty of the upcoming vote, noting that current polling provides little clarity on the eventual outcome and highlighting the presence of numerous small right wing parties that may act as kingmakers.
