Franco Baresi, the legendary defender and former captain of AC Milan and the Italian national team, died on Friday, July 31, at the age of 66. AC Milan confirmed the news through its official channels. Reports indicate that Baresi had been diagnosed with a pulmonary nodule during a routine checkup in August of the previous year. Although he underwent surgery, the condition led to pulmonary deficiencies that complicated his clinical state. Baresi spent his entire 20 year professional career at AC Milan, debuting in 1978 at the age of 17. He played 719 official matches for the club, a record surpassed only by Paolo Maldini. During his tenure, he won 18 titles, including six Serie A titles, three European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. With the Italian national team, Baresi earned 81 caps and was part of the squad that won the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He also competed in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. Tributes poured in from across the football world, including messages from rivals Inter Milan and Juventus, as well as international clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The AC Milan squad honored him with a minute of silence and by placing his iconic number 6 jersey on the pitch.
