Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visited Kumamoto Prefecture on Monday to assess the damage and local requests following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck last Tuesday. The quake registered a maximum seismic intensity of 7 in the city of Uki and town of Hikawa. In Hikawa Town, a first year high school girl died after being found collapsed in her room at home immediately after the earthquake.

During her one day trip, Takaichi was scheduled to inspect the damage via helicopter and visit evacuation shelters.
