Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

Japan spent a record 15.4 trillion yen, or approximately 96 billion dollars, over the past month in yen buying operations to stop the currency from sliding. Data from the Finance Ministry covering the period from July 30 to Wednesday shows this amount exceeded the previous monthly record of 11.73 trillion yen set in April and May. The intervention included a joint operation with U.S. authorities on July 31, which marked the first coordinated move between the two nations in either 15 or 28 years depending on the source. The Japanese government stepped into the market on July 30 after the U.S. dollar reached 163.99 yen, its highest level in about 40 years. While the joint intervention briefly pushed the dollar down to the lower 155 yen range, the currency has since returned to around 159 yen. Factors contributing to the yen's pressure include concerns over Japan's fiscal health under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and the U.S. dollar's status as a safe asset amid uncertainty regarding the Iran war.
