Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced Tuesday that the government will continue providing subsidies to cap retail gasoline prices at approximately 170 yen per liter. The subsidies, which have been provided to oil wholesalers since mid March, are intended to protect livelihoods and prevent economic disruption as the Middle East conflict drives up crude oil prices. Japan relies heavily on energy imports due to its lack of natural resources.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry reported that roughly 80 percent of the 1.16 trillion yen allocated for these subsidies had been spent by the end of July. Despite the continuation, lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties have called for a rethink of the program. These concerns regarding fiscal health coincide with other expansionary measures, such as a planned two year reduction of the consumption tax on food products from 8 percent to 1 percent starting in April.
