Voters in Kazakhstan went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new single chamber parliament. This marks the first time the country has elected a unicameral legislature, a change approved during a constitutional referendum in March. Approximately 12.6 million voters were called to the urns across more than 10,000 polling stations.
The new legislative body will consist of 145 seats elected proportionally via party lists. Seven parties fielded 545 candidates in the election. The Adilet party, formed in May and merged with the historic Amanat party, is considered the favorite to win a constitutional majority. The Aul party, representing the moderate opposition, is expected to place second, while other parties compete to meet the 5 percent electoral threshold.
