Kerala Man Honored After Fatal Rescue as Flood Recovery Continues

The Kerala government has granted state honors to Rajesh R, a swimming and disaster rescue instructor who drowned while saving a stranded farmer during recent floods in the Kannur district. Chief Minister V D Satheesan visited the family of Rajesh R in Thiruvananthapuram and announced that the government would fund the completion of the man's under construction house. The incident occurred on August 1 when Rajesh R gave his life jacket to 61 year old farmer S Benny, who was struggling against a strong current. Rajesh R was swept away by the river and his body was recovered on August 4.

Simultaneously, clean up operations are accelerating in the flood ravaged districts of Kottayam and Pathanamthitta as floodwaters recede. In Kottayam, 12,063 people remain in 139 relief camps, and educational institutions were closed on Friday due to an orange alert. In Pathanamthitta, 10,570 people are sheltered in 142 relief camps. Revenue Minister A. P. Anilkumar announced that the government will provide 10,000 rupees to every affected household for restoration and 10,000 rupees to inundated shops, while crop loss assistance will increase by 25 percent.

Damage reports indicate that two houses were completely destroyed in Adoor and Ranni, while 126 houses sustained partial damage across the region. Authorities continue to monitor the weather due to forecasts of isolated heavy rainfall and the risk of landslips in high range areas.
