King Haakon VIII has become the new monarch of Norway following the death of his father, King Harald V, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89. The late king, who had reigned for 35 years, died at Oslo University Hospital after being treated for hemolytic anemia, a rare blood condition. In his first official address to the nation on Saturday, the 53 year old King Haakon VIII paid an emotional tribute to his father, calling him a wonderful papa and praising his warmth and humor. He also congratulated his mother, Queen Sonja, on what would have been her 58th wedding anniversary with the late king.

King Haakon VIII is scheduled to swear an oath of allegiance to the constitution in parliament on Tuesday. While Norway abolished coronations in 1908, the new king may opt for a consecration ceremony at Trondheim Cathedral. He has adopted the motto Tout pour la Norvège, which translates to All for Norway.
