King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of the Tooro kingdom in western Uganda has died at the age of 34. The announcement was made on Thursday by the kingdom's prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who stated the king passed away around 10:00 p.m. local time. While the official cause of death was not disclosed, a Ugandan government minister, Balaam Barugahara, indicated that the king had been critically ill and seeking medical treatment in the United States.
King Oyo ascended to the throne on September 12, 1995, at the age of three following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. This made him the world's youngest reigning monarch, a title recognized by Guinness World Records. Although Uganda is a republic governed by an elected president and parliament, it maintains several traditional pre-colonial kingdoms. These institutions hold largely symbolic political power but maintain significant cultural and social influence.
Prime Minister Akiiki stated that although the king was not officially married, the continuity of the crown is assured. He noted that the king leaves behind a prince as his heir, whose identity will be revealed at a later time according to tradition. The death of the monarch prompted widespread grief on social media and national media coverage, including condolences from Bobi Wine, the leading opposition leader and a former pop star.
During his reign, King Oyo was known for promoting youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, and HIV/Aids awareness. He also spent time studying at Winchester University in the UK. His tenure included a 2015 challenge to his position by his cousin, Prince David Kijanangoma, who accused the king of neglecting the region.
