A significant earthquake in Kumamoto has resulted in 38 deaths, including suspected disaster related deaths, and left 6,737 people in evacuation centers. In Yatsushiro, Kumamoto General Hospital resumed normal medical services on August 5 after temporarily suspending general outpatient clinics. Footage from the hospital captured the tense atmosphere within the operating room at the moment the earthquake struck. In response to the damage caused by the quake, Fuji City has requested inspections of 33 chimneys that exceed 30 meters in height. Other impacts include the death of nine people at Nippon Paper, where the company president issued an apology during a press conference. The Kyushu Shinkansen is scheduled to resume service between Shin Minamata Station and Kagoshima Chuo Station on August 7 with a reduced number of trains.
