  • A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.

Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football on Monday via Instagram. The 39 year old captain and all time leading scorer for Argentina ends a 21 year career with the national team. Messi stated that the decision was painful but that the time had come because he has nothing more to give. He noted that he wrote the retirement letter on July 21, two days after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain. Messi added that the death of his father, Jorge, on August 8 further convinced him of the decision.

Messi retires as Argentina's most capped player with 207 appearances and its all time leading scorer with 125 goals. His international career included winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles, and an Olympic gold medal in 2008. In his final tournament, the 2026 World Cup held in the US, Canada, and Mexico, Messi scored eight goals and provided four assists. He finishes as the second highest scorer in World Cup history with 21 goals, trailing Kylian Mbappe.

His journey with the national team began in 2005 with a debut against Hungary, where he was sent off with a red card shortly after entering the match. He previously announced his retirement in 2016 following a loss to Chile in the Copa America final, but he reversed that decision shortly after. While he is retiring from international duty, Messi will continue playing at the club level for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, where he has a contract running through the end of the 2028 season.

Reporting on the event varied by perspective. Center leaning outlets focused on his statistical legacy and the timeline of his career. Center left outlets emphasized the emotional weight of his father's death and the historical context of his early recruitment. Center right outlets highlighted his standing among the greatest players of all time and the specific details of his final tournament performance. One center right outlet specifically noted that his career ended on an ugly note due to the behavior of his teammates during the final match.
