Lithuania Warns of Russian False Flag Drone Threats Amid Black Sea Escalation

Lithuania has issued warnings regarding the risk of Russian provocations in the Baltic region, specifically citing the possibility of false flag attacks against NATO countries. Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that the government is monitoring the threat level, with one scenario involving the use of intercepted or reconstructed Ukrainian drones to target critical infrastructure. This warning follows the discovery of a drone bomb at Leipzig airport in Germany, which Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described as a potential hybrid attack scenario.

In the Black Sea, tensions have risen as Russia targets shipping lanes and Ukraine attempts to isolate occupied Crimea. Reports indicate that a German cargo ship flying a Liberian flag, the Emil, was hit by a Russian strike near Odessa, causing a fire but no casualties. While the Russian Ministry of Defense claims it only targets vessels transporting military equipment for Ukraine, the governor of Odessa reported that Russia attacked a Guinea-Bissau flagged ship carrying Ukrainian grain, resulting in one death and three injuries. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukrainian forces responded by hitting two Russian military patrol boats and shadow fleet ships.

Ukraine also reported drone strikes on two Russian refineries, Bashneft-Novoil in Bashkiria and Slavneft-Yanos in Yaroslavl, located up to 1,300 kilometers from the front line. Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has urged member states to provide air defense missiles to Ukraine, following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump refused to deliver additional Patriot interceptors. Casualties continue to mount on both sides, with three civilians killed in Russian raids on Balakliia and three Russian civilians killed in Ukrainian attacks in the Bryansk and Kursk regions.
