Low Water Levels in the Danube Reveal WWII Relics and Human Remains

Low water levels in the Danube River have revealed the remains of two Wehrmacht soldiers and a motorcycle in Budapest. Experts from the Military History Museum and the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge recovered the remains and the vehicle from the riverbed. The preservation of the motorcycle and the soldiers' identification tags is attributed to the river mud being mixed with gas oil, which acted as a preservative. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge noted that the families of these soldiers may have never received official notification of their deaths. In addition to the motorcycle, a Tellermine 35 was discovered in Budapest, requiring the intervention of explosive ordnance disposal services. Other discoveries along the river include German warships in Serbia and mammoth bones in Bulgaria.
