Low Water Levels Threaten Energy Production and Prices Across Europe

Low river levels and drought conditions are forcing energy production cuts and raising price concerns across Europe. In Slovenia, the Krsko nuclear power plant is reducing production by 20 percent because of low water levels and high temperatures in the Sava river. Similar measures have been taken in Hungary, and the Romanian army recently blasted a rock formation to increase water flow in the Danube to prevent production cuts at its nuclear plant. In Norway, the NVE chief Kjetil Lund warned that power prices could become very high this autumn and winter due to unusually low reservoir levels in most parts of the country and international uncertainty.
