Lula and Alcolumbre Meet to Restore Relations After Senate Conflict

President Lula and Senate President Davi Alcolumbre met on Tuesday night to reestablish their relationship following a three month rupture. The tension between the two leaders began in April after the Senate rejected Lula's nomination of Attorney General Jorge Messias to the Supreme Court. While Lula previously resisted meeting with Alcolumbre due to this rejection, allies and government leaders urged the encounter to advance legislative priorities. One primary issue is the proposal to end the 6x1 work schedule, which has been stalled in the Senate. Both leaders indicated that further action on this proposal would occur after the October elections. Alcolumbre has claimed the rejection of Messias was a spontaneous result of Senate preference for a different nominee, though some senators suggest Alcolumbre orchestrated the defeat to appeal to Bolsonarismo.
