Lula and Alcolumbre Restore Dialogue to Advance Government Legislative Agenda

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senate President Davi Alcolumbre met on Wednesday at the Palácio da Alvorada to restore their working relationship and discuss priority legislation. The meeting follows months of tension that peaked in April when the Senate rejected Lula's nomination of Jorge Messias to the Supreme Federal Court. The discussions focused on several key government priorities, most notably a proposed constitutional amendment to end the 6x1 work scale and a Public Security PEC aimed at combating organized crime. Other items on the agenda included a measure to end the so called blusinhas tax on international imports and projects regarding critical minerals.

Lula reportedly urged Alcolumbre to do the possible and the impossible to approve the 6x1 scale proposal, which is a central pillar of his re-election campaign. Alcolumbre stated that he understands the importance of the government's priorities but avoided committing to a specific voting date. He noted that he must first consult with other senators and mentioned resistance from the productive sector regarding the work scale change. While the government's institutional relations minister, José Guimarães, described the meeting as a giant step toward unlocking the agenda, Alcolumbre told journalists there is no set calendar for the vote.

Political analysts and reports suggest the rapprochement involves strategic interests for both leaders. Some reports indicate that Lula may support Alcolumbre's re-election to the Senate presidency in 2027 in exchange for legislative cooperation. Conversely, Alcolumbre's alignment is seen as beneficial for Lula's political standing in Amapá. However, some observers caution that Alcolumbre remains in a comfortable position because he is not facing immediate election, allowing him to maintain a degree of caution before formally declaring an alliance.
