Major Wildfire Devastates Suffolk Nature Reserves Near Nuclear Plant

Emergency services have declared a major incident as a wildfire burns through Dunwich Heath and the Minsmere nature reserve on the Suffolk coast. The blaze has destroyed approximately 150 hectares of vegetation and forest, including protected sites home to rare bird species. Experts warn that the landscape has suffered total devastation and that some vegetation may take decades to recover. More than 100 firefighters, supported by a seawater dropping helicopter and appliances from across the country, are working to stabilize the situation.

The fire is located a few miles from the Sizewell B nuclear power station and the construction site for Sizewell C. EDF stated that operations at Sizewell B are not currently affected, and emergency managers said there is no immediate concern about the fire spreading toward the plant. However, some reports indicate the plant remains on alert as chiefs monitor the situation.

Approximately 50 to 200 people have been evacuated from their homes and nearby holiday parks, including Cliff House Holiday Park. Some evacuees were relocated to Westleton village hall, while others stayed in bed and breakfasts or their cars. Witnesses described the scene as apocalyptic, noting orange skies and powerful smoke.

The wildfire occurred during a period of drought in England and Wales, with some areas experiencing their driest July on record. Other blazes have been reported in Essex, Scotland, and Doncaster. While the cause of the Suffolk fire is not yet established, fire officials have advised residents against using disposable BBQs due to dry ground conditions.

Political responses varied. Prime Minister Andy Burnham promised necessary resources for the firefighters, a move praised by former local MP Therese Coffey. Meanwhile, Green Party leader Zack Polanski called for an emergency Cobra meeting to address the crisis.
