A man believed to be in his 20s died on Monday afternoon after entering a canal during a pursuit by police near the Notting Hill Carnival. The Metropolitan Police stated that officers attempted to stop the man near Harrow Road at approximately 15:19 BST. The man fled on foot and entered the water near Meanwhile Gardens. Officers and members of the public pulled him from the canal and performed CPR before paramedics transported him to a central London hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 16:43.
Cdr Claire Smart confirmed that the incident has been passed to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for a full investigation. She described the event as a tragic incident and asked the public to avoid speculation.
Police reported that the festival overall passed largely without incident, though two non life threatening knife injuries occurred. A total of 560 people were arrested over the course of the event, with 315 of those arrests occurring on Monday.
