Thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City on Tuesday for a mass funeral to bury 112 people from the Al-Hassayna and Abu Sharia families. The victims were recovered from the ruins of a residential block in the Sabra neighborhood that was destroyed by Israeli airstrikes on November 22 or 23, 2023. Palestinian authorities described the event as one of the largest mass funerals in the history of the Gaza war. The recovered remains included a significant number of children, with reports varying between 40 and 44 children among the dead.
A recovery team of 40 workers spent 17 days combing through the wreckage to retrieve the bodies. Civil Defense officials stated that the process was arduous due to a severe shortage of equipment. Some reports noted that crews had to dig through concrete and steel with their bare hands, while others mentioned that the operation relied on excavators provided with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross. According to Palestinian authorities, approximately 308 members of the extended family were killed in the original strike, and around 157 bodies remain missing under the rubble.
Survivors of the clan expressed profound grief during the ceremony. Omar Al-Hassayna, a 65 year old survivor who fled to Egypt, spoke of losing his wife, four adult sons, and four grandchildren. Taysir Al-Hassayna, another survivor, stated that the day reopened wounds from the massacre. The remains were draped in Palestinian flags and carried through the streets before being buried in a local cemetery.
Israeli military officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the specific strike. One center leaning outlet noted that the Israeli military had not provided a statement from November 2023 to explain the attack. Palestinian health authorities estimate that more than 73,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict, with approximately 8,000 people believed to still be trapped under rubble across the enclave.
