Massive Flash Floods Devastate Nepal Border Regions

Massive flash floods and mudslides have struck Nepal's districts bordering Tibet, resulting in over 150 deaths and hundreds of missing persons. The disaster primarily affected the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, where the Bhote Koshi river surged up to nine meters in thirty minutes. The flooding destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and at least a dozen hydropower projects, which impacted approximately 700 MW of power generation.

Among the missing are over 100 Indians, including many who were traveling to Kailash Mansarovar or trekking to Gosaikunda Lake. Other missing foreign nationals include citizens from the United States, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, the Netherlands, and Spain. Local casualties include 44 members of the Nepal Army, 28 police officers, and 13 members of the Armed Police Force.

International aid efforts are underway. A Spanish emergency committee comprising organizations such as Oxfam Intermón, Médicos del Mundo, and Acción contra el Hambre is preparing operations to provide food, water, and medical care. Save The Children is delivering emergency aid, though officials report that many communities remain inaccessible except by helicopter due to blocked roads and buried neighborhoods.
