Juan Camilo Hueje, the Mayor of Planadas in Tolima, was intimidated by armed men while participating in a community activity to inaugurate a vehicular bridge in the rural area of vereda La Esmeralda. According to reports from the Conservative Party and the Secretary of Security for Tolima, Alfredo Bocanegra, six armed men arrived on motorcycles and subdued the mayor's security detail. The attackers allegedly forced the security personnel to the ground, disarmed them, and pointed weapons at their heads.
Preliminary information indicates that the armed men identified themselves as members of the Frente Jerónimo Galeano, a dissident group of the FARC. Secretary Bocanegra noted that the attackers did not wear camouflage and possessed accents that did not seem native to the region. He suggested that the department might be serving as a retreat zone for armed groups moving from Cauca, though he emphasized that authorities are still analyzing this connection.
Mayor Hueje successfully returned to the municipal seat of Planadas following the incident. Tolima Governor Adriana Magali Matiz described the event as grave and unacceptable. She has notified the Ministry of Defense and requested increased security measures for the mayor, his family, and his government team, as well as a stronger presence of public forces in the southern part of the department.
