Meta Updates Smart Glasses to Prevent Secret Recordings

Meta has implemented a software update for its smart glasses that automatically disables the camera if the LED recording indicator is covered. According to Alex Himel, Meta's Vice President of Augmented Reality, the update addresses a loophole where users would start a recording and then cover the light to hide the activity from others. This follows a previous patch that prevented the camera from starting if the LED was already blocked. Meta stated that only a small minority of users attempt to bypass these protections.

The update comes amid increasing scrutiny and restrictions regarding the devices. In England and Wales, the judicial service has banned the glasses in courts, requiring users to surrender them upon entry. Some UK cinemas are also considering restrictions to prevent piracy. Meta has advised users to remove the glasses in sensitive locations such as doctors' offices, locker rooms, or schools.
