Metropolitan Police Investigate Reform UK Donations Linked to George Cottrell

The Metropolitan Police are investigating donations made to Reform UK by Fiona Cottrell, the mother of party figure George Cottrell. The probe focuses on whether donors circumvented restrictions on political funding sources under Section 61 of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. Reports indicate that George Cottrell allegedly transferred more than $2 million to his mother shortly before she made donations to Reform UK or Britain Means Business, a fundraising vehicle directed by deputy leader Richard Tice.

The Met's Special Enquiry Team launched the investigation in February 2025 following a referral from the Electoral Commission. While two people have been interviewed under caution, no arrests have been made. George Cottrell is identified as a convicted criminal who previously provided funding for Nigel Farage's security and staffing.

Reform UK has defended its financial practices, stating that it strictly follows all Electoral Commission guidelines. Richard Tice described Ms. Cottrell as a permissible donor from a successful aristocratic family.
