Mexico and Peru Restore Diplomatic Relations Following Four Year Conflict

Mexico and Peru have officially restored diplomatic relations as of August 7, 2026. The announcement was made via a joint statement from the foreign ministries of both nations, which cited historical ties of brotherhood, friendship, and cooperation, while reaffirming their respect for international law and the United Nations Charter. The reconciliation follows a period of severe tension that began in December 2022 after the attempted coup by former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo.

As part of the agreement, the Peruvian government granted a safe conduct to Betssy Chavez, the former Prime Minister under Pedro Castillo, allowing her to travel to Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that Chavez arrived in Mexico via a Mexican Air Force plane after having been sheltered in the Mexican embassy in Lima and later in Brazil. The Peruvian government noted that Chavez has been sentenced to 11 years and 5 months in prison for conspiracy to rebel and is under investigation for illicit enrichment. Peru stated that the safe conduct was granted with the reservation of the right to request her extradition in the future.

Despite the restoration of ties, President Sheinbaum stated that Mexico maintains its support for Pedro Castillo and will continue to call for his release from prison. The Peruvian government countered this by asserting that there is no political persecution in Peru and that the state operates under the rule of law and the separation of powers.
