Millions Witness Rare Solar Eclipse Across Europe

Millions of people across Europe gathered on Wednesday to witness a major solar eclipse, marking the first total solar eclipse in Western Europe in 27 years. In northern Spain and Iceland, the moon completely obscured the sun, plunging regions into darkness. In the United Kingdom, more than 90 percent of the sun was obscured between 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. the most significant blockage since 1999.

Spain deployed 25,000 police officers and nearly 100 aircraft to manage up to 6 million expected visitors in rural areas and the Balearic Islands. Authorities implemented a public safety campaign to prevent wildfires during a high risk period. A small vehicle fire occurred near a viewing point in Peniscola, Valencia, but was brought under control by firefighters. Notable attendees included former Queen guitarist Brian May, who viewed the event from an observatory in Teruel Province.

In Iceland, the phenomenon was partially obscured by clouds in central Reykjavik, though the darkness of totality remained evident. In Spain, the event served as a way to promote less traveled regions and draw tourists away from crowded beach resorts.

Following the event, Spotify reported a dramatic surge in space themed music. Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart saw a 94 percent increase in UK streams and a 14 percent boost worldwide. Other tracks with celestial themes, including songs by Pink Floyd and Chris Staples, also experienced significant increases in global and domestic streaming numbers.
