Alexandra Walker and Harrison Simpson have been jailed for life for the murder of Walker's two-year-old daughter, Isabelle Welsh. The child suffered weeks of abuse, including 21 broken bones, before she collapsed at her home in Thornaby, Teesside, in September.
Ms Justice Norton sentenced Simpson to a minimum term of 28 years and six months, while Walker received a minimum term of 22 years. Both were convicted of murder and child cruelty; Simpson was also convicted of sexually assaulting the toddler, though Walker was cleared of that specific charge.
The judge described the murder as the final act in a series of assaults that the defendants attempted to cover up. Ms Justice Norton stated that Walker delayed calling emergency services because she wrongly believed Isabelle was already dead and was attempting to save herself.
During the trial at Teesside Crown Court, the judge characterized Walker as a fantasist and an attention-seeker who lied about her education, pretended to have breast cancer, and claimed she did not use drugs while actually selling them. Evidence showed that Isabelle had been a happy child until Walker began dating Simpson via Facebook Dating.
Walker had previously searched for Simpson on the sex offenders' register after becoming suspicious of his behavior, which included bathing the child without consent. Although Walker later described him as a paedophile to her own mother, she continued the relationship.
