Mount Sinabung Erupts in North Sumatra Prompting Higher Alert

Mount Sinabung on Indonesia's Sumatra island erupted on Monday, sending a column of black ash and smoke 3,500 meters into the sky. The eruption occurred in the Karo district of North Sumatra province, with ash covering buildings, vehicles, and roads in several villages. Local authorities distributed masks to residents for protection.

Officials raised the volcano's alert level to a higher status. One report describes this as the "Watch" level, while another identifies it as Level III Siaga, or "alert." The eruption was recorded at 10:17 a.m. and lasted for more than one hour. Ash reached a radius of up to 20 kilometers toward the east and southeast.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, evacuations, or flight disruptions. However, people were advised to avoid activities within 6 kilometers of the summit. Experts from Indonesia's Geological Agency and the monitoring post stated that this may be an initial eruption and that a larger event could follow. This activity follows a period of increased seismic evidence in mid August.

This event marks a return of activity for the volcano, which one source notes had ceased volcanic activity in 2021. Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more than 120 active volcanoes.
