National Alert Issued as Wildfires Destroy Homes Across England and Wales

A national government alert was issued to millions of people across England and Wales on Friday warning them not to light anything that could spark a wildfire. The alert follows a series of blazes including a major fire in Stourbridge, West Midlands, where 19 homes were destroyed and 18 others were damaged. Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the country as a tinderbox and stated that 37 fires were burning across England and Wales. In Stourbridge, the fire spread rapidly through grass and woodland, forcing residents to evacuate and threatening a nearby equestrian centre. Other fires were reported in Wales near Llandovery, in Hampshire's New Forest, and in Norfolk.

In response to the crisis, the government announced a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues and the commissioning of firefighting planes. Prime Minister Burnham also pledged a financial support package for fire and rescue services and announced a summit to ensure they are properly resourced. In some areas, the police have arrested individuals on suspicion of arson. Emergency services treated 54 people across eight different fires on Thursday, with 19 of those individuals taken to the hospital. In Stoke on Trent, four homes were destroyed and six firefighters were hospitalized due to heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation.
